Inside the CYCL Face Guard Pollution Scarf

Face coverings have become commonplace across the world since 2020 and the Covid-19 global pandemic. Not only are face coverings useful for helping prevent the spread of Covid-19 but they can also range of airborne particles and bacteria that could cause sickness and those with filters can also protect against air pollution.

The health effects of air pollution are serious - one third of deaths from stroke, lung cancer and heart disease are due to air pollution. In fact, nine out of ten people now breathe polluted air, which kills 7 million people every year. Commuting, whether by bicycle, foot, scooter or via public transport, can present many circumstances where you find yourself exposed to possible harmful airborne particles.

The CYCL FaceGuard is an economical and comfortable way to cover your face that offers high levels of protection to help filter out larger particles from the air as well as help stop the wearer from unknowingly infecting others if asymptomatic.

We developed the CYCL Face Guard Pollution Scarf having faced air pollution whilst commuting in London. Whilst there were plenty of pollution masks out there, we wanted protection that could also fit in with our everyday wardrobe. Our scarf pulls over the head and fastens at the back with an elastic band and spring cord lock and offers protection from airborne particulates and air pollution without compromising style.

The CYCL Face Guard Pollution Scarf has an integrated nanofiber filter that captures 99.9% of PM2.5 including dangerous airborne particles from polluted air, smog and allergens and 99.5% of PM0.1. It is ready-to-use and hand-washable meaning there is no need to buy replacement filters. We designed the scarf with comfort, utility and everyday use in mind; it has an adjustable nose strip and elastic closure that ensures minimal air leakage for any face shape.

Nanofiber Filter Technology by Respilon

A nanofiber membrane is integrated into the FaceGuard tube scarf which filters particles and pollution. The filter has a four-layered textile laminate, with an inner layer formed by high-density nanofibers.
The nanofiber filter in the CYCL Face Guard Pollution Scarf has been tested according to ASTM F2100 and EN 14683, at Nelson Labs USA. See our Technical Data Sheet here.

Our Face Guard Pollution Scarf uses Respilon® 57 filter.

Respilon®57 is a 4 layered textile laminate fabric composed of:

1. SB Polyprophylene Spunbond

2. MB polypropylene Meltblown

3. NV Nanofibers layer

4. SB Polyprophylene Spunbond

The in-built filter has a four-layered textile laminate - with an inner layer formed by high-density nanofibers. Despite the high density of nanofibers, the filter is air-permeable and vapour-permeable - increasing the comfort and breathability for the user.

Recommended Maintenance:

Handwash (water temperature should not exceed 30C)

Do not bleach, dry clean, tumble dry or iron.

Best fit:

To achieve the best possible protection from air pollution, the scarf needs to fit perfectly over the nose and face. This can be achieved by the adjustable nose lip and will ensure that the inhaled air goes through the nanofiber filter. The scarf is one size and suitable for both adults and children thanks to the elastic band and spring cord lock.

Can the Face Guard Pollution Scarf protect me from influenza or airborne viruses?

The FaceGuard Pollution Scarf does not belong to the equipment for the medical or professional use that would be certified by official standards, but it can help shield against airborne particles. Nanofiber filter masks usually belong to a one-time equipment category. Because its filter is covered by special textile layer, our FaceGuard is more durable in terms of wear and care and therefore is able to be washed.

The FaceGuard Pollution Scarf can provide guaranteed virus protection before washing - 99.5% of 0.1PM. After washing it will still protect you but there will be some reduced effectiveness. For protection against viruses it is necessary to wash it after every single use. For protection from pollution, the scarf can be washed and you can still enjoy high levels of protection. We recommend up to 50 washes, naturally there will be some decline in effectiveness as you approach the end of the life of the product. Always hand wash without using aggressive substances like softener or bleach and refer to our care instructions found in the FAQs more more guidance and care instructions.
